International Co-operative Summit
The international Co-operative Summit 2012 will take place 8-11 October 2012 in Quebec City. The Summit is being held by the Desjardins Group (Canada's largest co-operative financial group) and hosted bty the International Co-operative Alliance and Saint Mary's University. The Summit's 1200 co-operative business leaders from 90 countries will engage with dozens of knowledgeable specialists in seeking co-operative solutions to the challenges facing the world today. Its theme "The Amazing Power of Co-operatives," echoes the theme of the International Year of Co-operatives: "Co-operatives Build a Better World."Visit the Summit Web Site
Our Time to Shine
There is only one month to go! In a month Australia will see the National Launch of the International Year of Co-operatives in Australia at Parliament House, Canberra, Australian Cqapital Territory on 22 November 2011. RSVP is essential for House Pass. Co-operatives throughout Australia are urged to send representatives to the launch - to demonstrate support for IYC 2012 and their support for co-operative values and principles. Co-operatives Victoria will be represented at the launch.
The Co-operative Past
Ian MacPherson, Emeritus Professor of History, University of Victoria, Canada, will speak on "The past is always with us...why co-op people should reflect on their history" at a Co-operative Federation of N.S.W. dinner at 6:15 p.m. on 12 December 2011 at The Royal Exchange of Sydney, 1 Gresham Street, Sydney, New South Wales. His research has been largely on the history of the co-operative movement. Currently, he is co-director of the Social Economy Hub - the national voice for the Canadian Social Economy Research partnerships. Books by Ian MacPherson include - Co-operative principles for the 21st century (1996), Co-operative movement on the prairies, 1900-1955 (1979) and Each for all: a history of the co-operative movement in English Canada, 1900-1945 (1979).
Community Power Conference
On 14 -15 November 2011 there is a Community Power Conference organised by the Centre for Sustainable Regional Communities, the Central Victoria Solar Cities Project and the City of Bendigo. The conference will review current energy efficiency and renewable energy strategies and actions being taken by Australian communities. It is expected that the conference will showcase examples of regional communities that have already or are in the process of implementing strategies for energy sustainability. The conference will be at the Bendigo Performing Arts Center, View Street, Bendigo.
Parliament House Launch of IYC 2012
The International Year of Co-operatives 2012 will be launched in the Main Committee Room at Parliament House, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, 11:15 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., The launch will be opened by Mr. David Bradbury, Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer. The launch has been organised for the Australian International Year of Co-operatives Steering Committee by the IYC 2012 Secretariat.
ICA General Assembly Meets
The international Co-operative Alliance's General Assembly will be meeting between 14 -18 November 2011 in Cancun, Mexico. This year's General Assembly takes on specific importance because it is the last General Assembly preceding the International Year of Co-operatives 2012. The theme for this year's General assembly is "International Year of Co-operatives 2012 - Co-operative Enterprises Build a Better World." Motions to be considered by the General Assembly cover and open consultative process and an Extraordinary General Assembly in Manchester in 2012, amendment to Seventh Principle, supporting the establishment of a Co-operative Institute for the Promotion of Peace and Social Cohesion, admission of mutuals to membership, declaration of Rochdale as World Co-operative Capital and the use of susrtainable timber & forest products.
Co-op College Down Under in 2011
The UK Co-operative College has released its proposed 2011 program for Australia and New Zealand. It is a critically important time to consider the role and importance of co-operative education with the International Year of Co-operatives in 2012. Since 2005 the Co-operative College has been working with co-operatives in Australia and New Zealand. All of the College's work can be customised to meet the needs of individual co-operative businesses. Download the brochure.
