  • Competitive Banking in Australia

    According to ABACUS Australian Mutuals research out today revealing that three in four Australians believe the big four banks have too much market power should trigger action to promote a more competitive banking market.The Australia Institute research paper Money and power says one in five people, or three million Australians, believe that a bank with bigger profits is safer and that younger people are much more likely to believe that a bank with big profits is safer.

  • Australian IYC Steering Committee
    The first Australian IYC Steering Committee meeting will be held in Sydney on Monday 30 August 2010. The Chairman of the Steering Committee is Trent Bartlett.  The Steering Committee is being resourced by Social Business Australia.  The IYC aims at raising awareness on the socio-economic impact of co-operatives, and for promoting the autonomous formation and growth of co-operatives.   • Housing Co-operative History
    The SouthEast Housing Co-operative Ltd in Dandenong, Victoria,will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in October 2010. As part of the celebrations a booklet will be published on the co-operative.  The booklet will outline the experience of rental housing co-operatives since 1985 qand the external and internal challenges over the years. While SouthEast Housing Co-operative Ltd was formed in 2000, the co-operatives that merged at the time were originally formed in 1985.
  • Mutuality and Taxable income
    The Australian Taxation Office has published a guide on Mutuality and taxable income. The guide is for non-profit clubs, societies and associations that are taxable.  It can be downloaded as a pdf from the ATO web site.

PPS reform and the Co-operatives Act 1996

The Victorian Government is proposing to repeal Schedule 3 to the Victorian Co-operatives Act 1996 - effective from the commencement of the new Commonwealth Personal Property Securities (PPS) regime. A new Commonwealth-administered Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is proposed to commence in May 2011. It will replace all State and Territory registers on which security interests in personal property (broadly, property other than land or buildings) are registered. A security interest is a general term for a charge or other encumbrance over personal property.

After discussions with the Co-operative Federation of Victoria Ltd, Consumer Affairs Victoria has issued an important circular to all registered co-operatives in Victoria - providing an update on the proposed Co-operatives National Law, outlining the main proposed changes and the impact on Victoria's Co-operatives Act 1996. There is also a promise to notify registered co-operatives of any proposed future changes to the legislation so that co-operatives have adequate information and time to prepare for changes.

The Co-operative Federation of Victoria Ltd has made a submission to the Senate Economics Committee Inquiry into Liquidators and Administrators. Submissions closed on 12 February 2010. The reporting date for the Committee is 31 August 2010. The submission is a confidential Committee document protected by Parliamentary Privilege. The submission has been released by the Senate Committee and is available on its web site. A theme of the submission is the role of Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV)?in appointing administrators and a recent disappointing experience of a CAV appointment - from a Government agency that continues to disappoint.

The board of Co-operatives Victoria met on 20 January 2010 to discuss the proposed? Co-operatives National Law. The board agreed to prepare a submission and is inviting input from member co-operatives. On the 21 January 2010 a memo was mailed to members inviting this input - following a previous memo of 17 December 2010.
